Cloudy but mild last night. The moth trap worked but only 4 moths - but 2 stunners! Merveille-du-Jour ( a typical oakwood species) and Barred Sallow - plus a load of small flies.

Lunchtime saw the first guided walk of the academic year. Around 20 of us went to Barnes Dell to see and to smell the "Treacle Trees", more correctly - the Katsura Trees. This fantastic tree from Japan and China has a very high sugar content in its leaves. When they fall and start to decompose they release a scent of treacle into the air! Unfortunately for us the adjacent farmer decide to muck-spread his field so picking up the delicate scent of toffee was not easy! More information here.
